A LABOR OF LOVE

The Book

Front cover
Spine

A while back I started making a book to record the work my daughter is doing in making the wedding dress for her niece, my grand daughter...

The making of the book
Completed book with shadowbox in back..all made of cardboard

Outside of completed book cover

The book was textured with both Rigid Wrap and and crinkled tissue paper and glue to give it stability then painted, sanded a bit and  repainted.
Inside of finished book and shadow box

Hand painted and colored pages

...the pages of the book are made of 140 lb watercolor paper and hand colored using acrylic paints and gesso for blending.

...the colored paper is folded into signatures and sewn into the spine....

...using the slots I cut into the spine...
...and the mannequin, made of air dry clay, is added to the shadow box....

The Making of a Bridal Gown
To start I added a poem I wrote.....

A sloper was made for proper fitting using this pretty checked gingham with embroidered daisies

more of the sloper and showing the checked fabric that the sloper was made of...

a few of the tools and supplies needed to make a bridal dress with the most important tool of all showcased in the frame...
more of the necessary tools
and still more tools, all of which are necessary for a successful job...

  1. Darlene, you take my breath away! What a beautiful project! I lack experience in sewing, and what you are documenting here almost seems like a foreign language to me. You have created something real yet mysterious.
